April 7
Unless there is a town ahead for resupply, Matthew and I never seen to have an answer to this question when we're asked and it puzzles most. They all seem to have a shelter or specific campsite in mind that's X miles ahead. It's partially that we're both naturally not great at planning, I'm sure, but we talked about it yesterday and realized that it makes the day more exciting. It's more of an adventure if you don't know where you're going to end up at the end of the day and we find that we're frequently finding space on the side of the trail on beautiful mountaintops in what feels more like wilderness rather than staying with 10 other people in a ready-made campsite. The shelters are great for foul weather, but we avoid them otherwise and the campsites feel a bit too prepared and are a bit noisy.
We walk until we have about two hours of daylight left and then start looking for a good place.
We found a great site last night and I'm writing this watching the sunrise with nature.
